New top levels domains (TLDs) explained

In 2015 the Domain Name Space has gone through huge transformation when over 1000 new Top Level Domains (TLDs) became available for registration. This expansion presents phenomenal potential for growth and creativity. We put together an alphabetic list of the newly available TLDs and some basic information to help navigate the jargon and facts.

Domain name system

DNS or otherwise known as Domain Name System was created to associate unique computer ip addresses, which are a set of numbers – into memorable names addresses. The first ever domain name – symbolics.com was registered in 1985 for free.

3 decades later and we have nearly 200,000,000 domain names registered by nearly a 1000 registrars. Application fee to shrine a company brand in a TLD cost $185,000 with the yearly fee to run a registry set at $25,000.

In 27 January 2016 an auction was help to resolve the contention over the set of .shop and .shopping (gTLD). The new .shop and .shopping gTLDs went to GMO Registry, Inc. for approx $45,500,000.

Domain name types:

TLDs – Top Level Domains – are the letters found at the end of an Internet address. Examples:.com .net .org
sTLDs – Sponsored Top level domains – Examples: .gov .mil .edu
gTLDs – Generic Top Level Domains – represent communities, interests, businesses, things or commonly used words
ccTLDs – Country Code Top Level Domains – represent countries or territories. Examples: .uk .us
IDNs – Internationalised Domain Names – integrating the use of non-Latin scripts, enabling multilingual web navigation.

The New gTLD Program

The New gTLD Program was initiated and managed by ICANN -The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. It is the largest expansion of the domain name system growing from just 22 to over 1000 gTLDs.

Through this process communities, governments, businesses and brands had the opportunity to suggest and apply to operate TLDs registry (the database of domain names registered in a top-level domain)

The New gTLD Program improved and energised the domain name eco-system and the internet as a whole. Some of the changes and benefits are:

Web Presence & Variety

With internet presence becoming paramount for efficient operation and marketing of any size business these days, the introduction of new gTLDs provided a much needed space for growth both for startups and existing businesses wishing to refresh their online branding.

By expanding the scope of generic TLDs, additional diversity and clarity is available when selecting a domain name. The domains can now be used to highlight the focus or operational field of the entity it represent; an industry a product a service etc.

Multilingual Internet

The introduction of IDNs International domain names opens up the use of non-Latin scripts enabling people to navigate the world wide web in their own language.

Branded & Secure

Some new gTLDs are created in an attempt to address security concerns, providing assurance for safe experience when visiting those domains. Big Brands using those new gTLDs to identify their sites, eliminating confusion over fake sites, which can lead to identity theft and counterfeit sales.

Locations & Communities

New ccTLDs (country Code domains) make it easy to quickly identify where a business, organisation or individual is located. Some new community-based domains which show connections to specific communities may include certain eligibility restrictions upon registration to ensure that that registered domains have been verified as belonging to a member of that community.
